Baku’s Rag Book

Baku's Rag Book is a publication made out of discarded fabrics. It is crafted with the stories of workers from the infamous cotton mills of Ahmedabad. Through the pages made of repurposed textile waste, it unfolds the heart-warming narratives from the glorious mill days.

50 copies of this book were screen-printed, with each book being unique as it had different pieces of rag fabric. As a group of 12 students, we went around the city, gathering stories of mill workers. The narratives were then articulated by each one of us with a supporting illustration.

Multiple screens were made corresponding to each page of the book. It was further printed on rag fabric that was cut to size and ironed. While the text was printed in black, the illustration was printed using another colour.

The book has a french fold bind to reinforce the thickness of a single cloth-page and to prevent the fabric from having frayed edges.
